Dusk: Arena of Shadows Now Live on KickstarterSeptember 12, 2018
Tifa wrote about Dusk: Arena of Shadows in her PAX West 2018: Board Game Spotlight as one of her top three board games available to play that weekend, and it’s not hard to see why. Dusk: Arena of Shadows is a tactical deck builder with “miniatures” combat, sharing some similarity in mechanical concept with the excellent Carthage from SAS Creative.
I said “miniatures” in quotes, because the models are very large when compared to your standard miniature fare, with some models at or over 135mm in size! Their figures have all the benefit of increased scale that you’d expect. Careful detail has clearly been sculpted into each piece, and painting them looks to be an easier affair given their larger size.
Thematically, the game has teeth. Here’s a lore snippet from the game’s website:
LIKE THE STARS SCATTERED ACROSS THE VOID, THE PHANTOMS ARE THE LAST GUTTERING LIGHTS OF AN ANCIENT, DEAD WORLD.
A DECADENT NOBILITY BLOATED ON THE ENERGIES SIPHONED OFF THEIR DEMESNE, THEIR APPETITES GREW UNTIL IT ECLIPSED ANY POINT OF SUSTAINABILITY. ENTIRE POPULATIONS WERE CONSUMED IN THEIR GREED. NOW, WITH NOTHING LEFT TO SUSTAIN THEM AND THEIR HUNGER UNDIMINISHED, THE PHANTOMS MUST HUNT THE ONLY PREY LEFT – EACH OTHER.
How wild is that? Just four sentences in, and I’m hooked. And clearly I’m not the only one. Reception of Dusk: Arena of Shadows has been overwhelmingly positive so far. Jamus Thayn, the founder of Widdershins Games, had this to say:
We worked really hard on it. I think its a very simple core mechanic but its got a lot of depth. Our reception in the wild has been nuts with people at PAX and Gen Con coming back and playing after hours multiple times until the wee morning.
If Dusk: Arena of Shadows sounds just as good to you as it does to me, then I highly encourage you to check out their Kickstarter.
