Warhammer Wednesday – Festive Fiction

‘He’s making a list, he’s checking it twice, he’s going to find out who’s naughty or nice; Eisenhorn is coming to town.’

Christmas time is upon us and the nights are drawing in. Admittedly not everywhere but Games Workshop is based in Nottingham so it will be dark and raining for the next few months. Fortunately the Black Library is on hand to entertain you during those longer winter evenings (or sunny evenings, depending on location).

Not as tasty as chocolate

Lasts longer than chocolate.

It may be a bit of an investment but three days in and there is already another Severina Raine tale by the superb Rachel Harrison. A subscription to the Black Library Advent calendar grants access to an new short story every day from the 1st to the 24th of December. Covering Age of Sigmar, Warhammer 40,000, Horus Heresy, Warhammer Quest, Necromunda and the Primarchs this is a fantastic way to experience the both new and existing authors.

as does Rachel Harrison

Severina Raine rules!

The 2016 and 2017 Advent subscriptions were a trove of wonder. 2018 promises to be even better.

Spear of the Emperor

mmmm, delicious

A mighty tome of mightiness.

Arron Dembski-Bowden is a fan favourite, both as an author and champion for a more inclusive hobby. With Spear of the Emperor he has developed a new Space Marine chapter for us to explore. Honestly I would be excited enough at that prospect alone. What really sets this release apart is the Limited Edition. Packed with all sorts of goodies like other limited edition sets but offering something else unique and truly interesting…

These will be expensive on ebay

Is a Trident a Spear?

Transfers! You can happily create an army of the Emperor’s Spears and make them look the part. In addition there is a chapter traits card to field them as a unique force. If you want a truly exciting gift for a Warhammer 40,000 fan this year then I’d highly recommend this. If you buy them models they’ll just sit unpainted for six months.

War Claw

Zana is really cool.

Did I say how cool Zana is?

If you prefer an audiobook then War Claw has everything you need for the festive season. Snow, guy with a beard, the search for a perfect gift and beastmen. Most importantly you get to follow the continuing exploits of sarcastic bad ass Zana Mathos in this second installment of the Eight Lamentations series. As lovely as the epic nature of Age of Sigmar is I find these more human takes on the setting deeply satisfying; especially with protagonists that break the usual male, pale and stale format. Hopefully you will too.

Blackstone Fortress

Space-buckling it is.

Swashbuckling in space. Space-buckling?

An absolute steal if you purchase the ebook version. Blackstone Fortress will give you warm winter feels whilst you wait to open the box under the tree you know has to be the Blackstone Fortress game. Admittedly it may just be a huge box of chocolate which I’m pretty much ok with.

The Warhammer 40,000 universe is expanding the lesser explored parts of the setting with Blackstone Fortress playing a major part in that. Old or new fans alike will find this an absolute page turner as we delve deeper into the characters of Janus Draik and his motley crew.

Enjoy your festive season!
