Games I Look Forward To Playing in 2019January 2, 2019
Happy New Year!
2018 was a great year for gaming and my hope is that 2019 will be as well! Beyond personal gaming goals of wanting to attend more prereleases, play more Magic with my husband, and attend more gaming conventions as a writer, there are also a few games I hope to play.
Darwin’s Choice – Expected March 2019
As someone who loved studying evolutionary theory in college so much so that I received a minor in Biological Anthropology, Darwin’s Choice looks like a game for me. In this game, players use cards to construct hybrid animals competing to create the best animal to survive and adapt to an ever-changing world. From the looks of it, the replayability is high with 220 animal species to choose from. Since points are rewarded for different traits related to survival, my hope is that there are a variety of strategies that can lead to victory.
Alubari: A Nice Cup of Tea – Estimated Q2 2019
Alubari: A Nice Cup of Tea was demoed at a few conventions in 2018, including Essen and the UK Games Expo. Using the same mechanic from Snowdonia, this is a worker placement game all about cultivating and harvesting tea. This sounds delightful! On top of being a tea farmer, players must also assist in the building of the town and railroad system for the town of Darjeeling. This game likely makes the players manage their resources effectively and focus on multiple goals in order to win. These are all traits that intrigue me in gaming, and if it is like Snowdonia, gameplay might also include my absolute favorite mechanic, drafting.
Clockwork Island – TBD?
Honestly, not a lot is public yet about Clockwork Island, but the awesome logo alone caught my attention. Anything based in a steampunk themed universe is worth looking at in my humble opinion. Further learning that it is a story-driven, worker placement game with the goal of each playthrough being a unique experience, it is on my list of games to watch out for in the new year. From the same company that has successfully funded a number of board games, I have faith that this one will also become a reality. However, this game has been on the radar for a long time and there is no guarantee that it will happen during 2019.
Honorable Mention: Ravnica Allegiance – January 25, 2019
My list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the upcoming Magic: The Gathering set, Ravnica Allegiance. Ravnica will always have a special place in my heart, as Guilds of Ravnica was one of the first sets I was a brand manager for and as the set that helped me find my true Magic identity in the Simic Combine. I am so dedicated to my guild, that the Simic symbol is tattoed on my right shoulder, so of course, I am thrilled for the chance to play Simic in the Ravnica Allegiance prerelease and beyond. To make it even more exciting, this set’s tagline is “Defend Your Guild” meaning that my allegiance is important to the storyline. Spoilers have already started, and I can’t wait to adapt my creatures for the survival of the fittest.
I would love to hear about more upcoming games that you are excited for in 2019! Tweet at me.
