The Explorers of Azullucent – A Story Inspired by GamingFebruary 26, 2019
The Explorers of Azullucent is a young adult fantasy novel about the coming of age story of three women: a swashbuckling pirate, a rebellious princess, and a traveling cuisinière that all want more out of life. On the brink of a raging war, the three women are brought together by a drifter. Upon meeting, it becomes clear that these women have more in common than expected. They all own the same necklace, which appears to have magical properties when the three gems are brought together. They must join forces to learn the truth behind their necklaces and stop the war of darkness before it’s too late.
Gaming is a powerful medium. Games have led me down the path of my entire life – they inspired me to write, helped me find friends in a new city, guided me into a career, introduced me to my husband, and so much more.
When I was 14-years-old I started to draft characters inspired by RPG video games. This was before I’d discovered the amazing world of tabletop games beyond games like Sorry!, Careers, and Pay Day. These characters had deep backstories and lived in a unique world inspired by medieval fantasy. It wasn’t long before this idea for a game evolved into a novel. The world was entitled Azullucent, influenced by the blue light from the magical crystal necklaces that the three main characters share.
I wanted to capture the same feeling of adventure that I enjoyed from playing RPGs with the added feeling of empowerment from relating to the characters because they were strong women. I hadn’t been exposed to a lot of fantasy settings with female protagonists and it was something that I wanted to change. I wanted to see women as the main protagonists in a story about fighting pirates, royal kingdoms, enchanting magic, and catastrophic war.
Captain Sting is a hardcore pirate captain, Princess Elizabeth is a rebellious princess who will stop at nothing to do what is right for her kingdom, and Gretchen Grant is the relatable outlander who wants to visit every continent in the world in pursuit of becoming a head chef. Because representation is so important to me, I try to capture a variety of perspectives and cultures in this story.
I fell so deep in love with writing that I pursued a degree in Creative Writing, with the intent of someday getting the novel I’d spent years on published.
Here I am, 16 years later and the lifelong dream of publishing my novel is about to become a reality. The novel has gone through many transformations over the years. I am on my seventh revision and expect to be finished by the end of the year. My Kickstarter to support this dream launched today. I would love any support that you can provide.
I would love if this novel is successful enough that I can later create a board game inspired by this world and these characters. That full circle would be an incredible accomplishment of combining three of my passions into one – my love for games, my passion for writing, and my feminist values.
Thank you for reading my story and for any support that you can provide.
